A debut feature film titled M by Finnish artist and filmmaker Anna Eriksson will premiere at 33rd Venice International Critic’s Week. International Critic’s Week screens in competititon seven debut films selected by Italian Cinema Critics Association (SNCCI). M will compete in Venice for the Critics Week prizes as well as for Venice Film Festival’s Lion of the Future Award, which is worth 100.000 USD. General Delegate of Venice International Film Critics’ Week Giona A Nazarro on selecting Eriksson’s film: "I believe M is a very challenging, bold and brave piece of work. M definitely pushes the boundaries of cinema forward”.
M is a work of art that explores the relationship between sexuality and death. These two appear to be at opposite poles, but in fact they merge in all of us, disguising the fear of death or the desire to die, the world of Eros. In the film Anna Eriksson deals with these themes through the character M, which is inspired by Marilyn Monroe. "M is the most challenging and most important work in my career. It is my own vision and I produced it independently, so it feels great to be included in the line up of only seven debut features in the prestigious Venice International Critic’s Week. I cannot wait to share my film with the international audience", says Anna Eriksson.
Anna Eriksson (b.1977) is one of Finland's leading musicians. Four years ago Eriksson took time away from her long and multi-award winning music career in order to concentrate in the making of the film M. Anna Eriksson is responsible for all the artistic aspects of the film. The cinematography is by Matti Pyykkö. The film is the production of Eriksson's Ihode Management. The Finnish premiere of M is set for the 31st Helsinki International Film Festival in September.
The Venice Film Festival, Settimana Internazionale della Critica and Giornate degli Autori will all be held from 29 August to 8 September 2018. M is the only Finnish film chosen for Venice this year.
